In Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, as one of three new POPP outdoor table tennis tables was being installed, we had some tough looking kids drop their BMXs and skateboards for a game. They stayed for hours. Competitive, messy and ridiculously fun.
City of Fremantle commissioned local Perth artist Jae Criddle to create a piece of engaging public art for one of the City's Kings Square outdoor ping pong tables. The result, a project of perspective. A man with wings. Or, a man with a pheasant pecking at his back. The table has been both a talking point for Fremantle residents and a positive addition to public art scene. The table of course continues to be used endlessly, for ping pong.
Our friend and London-based photographer, Jonas Bresnan (www.jonasbresnan.com) deserved a rest from shooting famous, beautiful people (really?) so he came to Perth, drank cider and played ping pong with us. Perth, rather unsurprisingly, produced more fine fine weather for a day of craftily-spun serves and desperate, lunging dives.
'You could take to it with an iron bar and there wouldn't be a scratch on it.' The City of Sydney, pleased with the nigh-indestructible nature of the infamous POPP table.

Out of the factory and bound for the paint shop. These beauties are now part of the Port Hedland landscape. |
New artwork has arrived in Fremantle on one of their outdoor table tennis tables. It’s an octopus with a huge, scary eye – watching out for hecklers and passive bystanders. The two tables (with artwork by local artists) have caused a stir in both the hardcore ping pong scene and the marine biology fraternity (who fear it’s not an accurate representation of the eight-legged creature). |

It’s not the arctic and there are no monkeys, but there are crocodiles, wet seasons, Arnhem Land and now, POPP tables in the Northern Territory. In the coming month, Darwin will install its first outdoor ping pong table – super cool, much like the Arctic Monkeys are in this game of ping pong. |
We have a sneak peek at some hand made POPP bats that will be released in limited run early this year. They wont be stocked in Target, so you will need to pre-order from info@popp.net.au – $25 including postage to Australia. Colourful rubber to be applied soon! |
